What is a Tracing Wheel? A tracing wheel is a measuring and marking tool used in textile and tailoring. Its main purpose is to draw precise and neat lines on fabric or to transfer markings from a pattern to fabric. It is commonly used by tailors, fashion designers, and in garment workshops. Structure and Features Wheel / Roulette Part: It is in the shape of a small wheel. It draws a line by being rolled over the fabric. Some models have toothed or smooth wheels; the toothed ones leave a more distinct line on powdered fabrics. Handle / Grip Part: Allows the user to hold it comfortably. Can be made of plastic, metal, or wood. Marking Medium: In some tracing wheels, powder or special ink is applied to the wheel. It leaves a temporary line on the fabric, which disappears when washed or ironed. Areas of Use Pattern Transfer: Used to transfer measurements and lines from a ready-made pattern to fabric. Temporary marking is done without damaging the fabric. For Hem Tape and Powdered Fabrics: Hem tape is used for accurate alignment before sewing trouser hems. Ensures the line is visible and precise on powdered or thin fabrics. Design and Model Transfer: Marks, motifs, or model details from the pattern are transferred to the fabric as lines. Usage Technique Powder or marking material is placed in the tracing wheel (if applicable). The fabric is laid flat on an even surface. The wheel is rolled gently along the desired line with slight pressure. Once the line is complete, a temporary, clear mark is left on the fabric.
